The Not for Profit Band raising money for the Deerfield Free Store

 — (CST, UTC-06) — (CST, UTC-06)

28 Mile Distillery, 454 Sheridan Rd, Highwood

The Not for Profit Band is rocking out to raise money for the Deefield Free Store! The Mission of the Deerfield Free Store is to provide recently immigrated refugees and displaced individuals with essential household items enabling them to create a home environment in their new surroundings within the Chicagoland area.

We are raising money to fund research for Spinocerebellar Ataxia Type 6 (SCA6). SCA6 is an inherited degenerative brain disorder that has been in my family for generations, greatly impacting my grandmother, father, sister, and aunt's lives. It affects your cerebellum, a part of your brain responsible for coordination of movement. This inherited condition worsens over time and causes problems with coordination of the eyes, hands, legs, speech, and swallowing. It takes only one copy of the mutated gene from one biological parent to cause the condition. Therefore, when a person with SCA6 has children, each child has a 50% chance of inheriting the mutated gene.

Researchers, including Dr. Christopher Gomez, are exploring ways to help people manage and treat SCA6, which is why funding is desperately needed! Dr. Gomez established The University of Chicago Ataxia Center in 2006 as a specialty clinic and research center devoted to the diagnosis, treatment, and management of ataxias. Dr. Gomez has over 20 years of expertise in the evaluation and treatment of patients with diverse forms of degenerative ataxia. Your generous donations will help further his research in hopes of developing a cure!

Worldwide, human trafficking is more than a $100 billion industry. Every minute more women and children are disappearing into this horrific trade which leaves permanent scars at a bare minimum. Many never make it out of their captivity.

Melapalooza

 —  —

Centennial Park, Grafton, WI

Melapalooza is just a week away. We are looking forward to a great event. The long-range weather forecast is good - we’ll keep our fingers crossed. A nice day will bring out a good crowd.

What is Mel's Charities? http://www.melscharities.org/melapalooza

In 1995 Tom "Mel" Stanton and a group of friends gathered at Cedars Lanes in Cedarburg, WI to enjoy some good food and watch a little football. About 50 people attended. The group continued to get together each fall.

In 1999 everything changed, a good friend of the groups lost his sister to cancer. She was a single mother with a special needs daughter who participated in Special Olympics. The decision was made to hold a raffle during the event in her memory. $350 was donated to Special Olympics in her memory.

Mel’s Charities mission is to have Great Times for Great Causes in Ozaukee County. Mel’s specializes in funding special needs organizations, high school scholarships in memory of individuals who have passed, and human service organizations.

We have become the known name in Ozaukee County for having fun unique events. As a team (all volunteers) we are determined to be a major source of funding for local organizations that meet our mission.

It’s been an amazing journey and we look forward to continue having Great Times for Great Causes!
